About FIT/microFIT

The microFIT program is a stream of the Ontario Power Authority’s (OPA) Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program for renewable energy in Ontario. The program enables homeowners, farmers, small business owners and managers of institutions (i.e. schools or places of worship) to generate their own solar energy and sell it back to the electrical grid at a guaranteed price. The fixed price paid to you for your energy is secured by a 20-year contract that is honored by the Government of Ontario. Going green and taking part in Ontario’s rapidly growing green energy movement has never been easier! The microFIT program is risk-free and guarantees you a substantial return on your investment.

MicroFIT acts as an indirect-subsidy that supports Ontarians who are striving to strengthen the green energy movement. Once your solar energy system is installed, your property will have two electricity meters: (1) measuring the amount of electricity you are consuming (for which you pay a low price) and (2) measuring the amount of electricity your solar energy system is producing (for which you are PAID a very high price). The difference between the two prices is de facto a subsidy for your good deed (i.e. going green).

The FIT/microFIT program falls under the Ontario Green Energy Act that was introduced into the Ontario legislature on February 23rd, 2009.

microFIT - projects up to 10kW (around 1000 sqft)

10kW systems are the sweet spot since:

  • You are offered the highest rate of 80.2c per kWh (64.2c for ground-mounted projects).*
  • The application process is simplified and does not require costly assessments and approvals.
  • Application approval takes only 2-3 months with an additional 1-2 months for other paperwork, installation and connection to the grid.

FIT – projects over 10kW

Allows for the maximum capacity utilization of your barn, storage facility, commercial building or farm roof.

  • Rates of 71.3c for rooftops and 44.3c for ground-mounted projects.
  • Requires connection impact assessment, engineering approval and feasibility study.
  • Approval process takes 6-9 months. Additional time for paperwork and installation varies by project size.

*Rates are fixed over a 20 year contract term
